Winter is here—are you planning to buy a high-pressure oil pipe protective sleeve? The market now has more and more hydraulic hose protectors, with a variety of types. So, how do you tell the good ones from the bad? Orientflex is here to share some tips for choosing a high-quality spiral guard wrap.
4 steps to choose a high-quality spiral hose guard
First, take a close look
Check if the spiral protective sleeve’s surface is smooth. Professionally speaking, better PP material has a smaller molecular weight in its raw form. So, a smooth surface is a good sign. If the surface looks uneven, the spiral is likely made with doped recycled materials.

Second, give it a sniff
Smell the spiral guard hose protector to check for odors. PP itself is colorless and odorless, so a high-quality hose guard should have no smell. Where does a pungent odor come from? It turns out that during the crushing process of recycled waste rubber, other chemicals are added—and these create that strong smell.
Third, ask questions
Before buying, ask if the product is sold by the meter or by the kilogram. High-quality spiral sleeves use original materials, so they’re lightweight and sold by the meter. Poor-quality hoses, though, are heavier. They’re made from recycled rubber and other materials, so they’re generally sold by the kilogram.

Last, feel it with your hands
Judge the hydraulic hose wrap by its thickness and texture. A wrap that feels thick isn’t necessarily more wear-resistant. If you rub a thin and a thick spiral sleeve on uneven ground, the overly thick protective cover will have a larger wear area—and wear more severely. Products made from recycled materials have much lower wear resistance. They only mislead consumers visually by being thicker. In reality, their wear resistance is poor. What’s more, they’re hard to install.
